Since 1949, Olsson's has been the only family owned and operated salt company in Australia, and one with a diversified practice owing to its production of both gourmet salt products and nutritional supplements for livestock.
It was an operation that began in dire times, when local graziers looked for someone in the district to produce supplements to meet the needs of their sheep and cattle during drought. To this day, Olsson's is a leader in livestock nutrition and continues to provide sustenance to herds across the country both in times with and without need.
In 1964, Olsson's began producing fine salt for human consumption on South Australia's Spencer Gulf - a region perfectly suited owing to the unsurpassed amounts of wind, sea water and sun available - the only three 'ingredients' utlisiized to produce Olsson's salt. There are no chemicals used in the process, an endeavour that lends Olsson's such a famed taste and pure character.
Olsson's are the first company to produce 'flat' sea salt flakes - highly similar to the famed French "fleur de sel" flakes, and one others have failed to emulate.
